MIDI Sans
Frontires
This is a gallery of the fantastic contributions to the Midi Sans Frontières collaboration project.
It was an attempt to challenge the toxic legacy, namely the legitimisation of racist and xenophobic attitudes in the UK, generated by several leading campaigners in the UK's referendum on membership of the EU. All people were invited to collaborate using musical materials that I provided, the only stipulation being that to be listed in this archive, any work had to be titled Midi Sans Frontieres. A big thank you to all involved.
- Processed and acoustic guitars, some of the original stems, a field recording of a place in a dream, a quiet despair and a sonic hope - the different layers of oneness.
- Thanks for letting us muck around with the stems!!
- it was 3am, couldn't sleep - this just happened...
- Submitting again. Thanks in advance for the add. Hope you like this version.
- my weird remix of the track, thankxx Tom
- Created exclusively on a Moog Mother 32 - 1 single unit - Overdubbed for the chords
- It was so much fun to work with these stems - I took the opportunity to go ahead and mess around with it, without much restriction.
- Solidarity from Estonia
- Something about better late than never...
- It was a lot of fun to make a remix after such a long time! Made this in the mountains on a rainy day in south of France...
- Thanks so much for this oppertunity Mr Pusher sir. Been a fan for a long time and was a dream come true to be able to work on one of your tracks. This is by no means a finished piece, but I'm so incredibly busy I don't know if I'll ever finish it, and it kinda works as is, and I didn't wanna miss the submission boat so to speak. Maybe when I get more time I'll finish it. Keep being awesome man! Much love. Kyle Macleod.
- Took my laptop to the mountains and made this remix. Fun! Thanx Tom for the MIDI files!!! It's been more than a decades since I made a track on computer...
- what did Britain say to its trade partners? see EU later!
- "Thank you for releasing the stems. Feel free to not list this tune if it breaks any rules. I enjoyed making it and had so many version of it. Sadly, I can't go on so I am releasing what I have right now. Regards,BFNK"

- Thanks for the MIDI ! here's my contribution. Using the melodies, adding drums and some other cool stuff
- INSPIRED BY THE MESSAGE AND THE MOOD OF THE PROJECT, WE NEED and MUST HAVE HOPE !
- It might sound a bit doggy … i worked it with headphones … monitors in brown boxes :-( But it's 100% Moog Mother 32 except for the hi-hat & snare.
- It was a pleasure to work with your composition. Thanks for this project. I hope that you like this submission.
- Hi. I just wanted to keep you in the loop on the as yet unfinished project me and a few others are working on for the MIDI Sans Frontieres open collab. The above is a snippet of the remixed beat by me, with Thomas Steffen aka ctraltu (http://www.ctraltu.com/) on Sax and drafting the visuals together. I'm hoping to get a vocal also but that's in progress......hope you like it, and huge respect for launching this project. My whole thing is about collaborating globally with artists I connect with through social media, so although artistically I dont really work within geographic boundaries I was quite disturbed by Britains voting choices on the EU referendum, so this project is perfect for me. Respect. Glen (aka Hipnotic Jazz - hipnoticjazz.bandcamp.com - instagram.com/hipnoticjazz - soundcloud.com/hipnoticjazz )

- I expanded (or adapted) the theme somewhat to an American standpoint to, in effect, portray the ubiquitous corrosive nature of divisiveness and cultural isolationism. Hope you approve.
- Here's my version of your beautifully inspiring track! Thanks for the opportunity and best regards!

- Thank you SQRPSHR for the amazing opportunity to re-work your epic song. Big fan since the late 90's, so this is very special for me. Thanks ~ Symbion Project
- Hi Tom! It is a great honor to participate in this collaborative invitation! People have to be open minded in a global world. Justice must prevail and people have to look for it. Thanks for let me be part of it. For that remix, I only used three samples to make the whole track, trying to make a remix to inspire that feeling that we need to fight for. Here you can find remix in wav format. Respect for that great initiative! Best, Redwan
- I'm not a musician, I work with visuals instead, I thought I would start a piece using the stems as I wanted to contribute in some way to this. - Here is a first draft, the audio is the original mixdown. feedback appreciated! [jamieshaw.86]@gmail .com
- MIDI Sans Frontieres - Squarepusher (& Halfdevils half). A great track to work on. Loved the idea. Loved the melody & took me well out my comfort zone. Some great work on here, inspiring stuff.
- We're stunned by the Brexit referendum, and angered by the intolerance it perpetuates and the rift it leaves behind. Our response - noisy thrashing about on drums and electronics - does not solve such issues, but we're grateful to be a small part of this musical movement that stands for acceptance and love.

- https://soundcloud.com/marco-simioni-89/marco-simioni-midi-sans-frontier-let-the-peace-overwhelm-youMy version of Squarepusher's protest against Brexit. Maybe it's not so an original take on the main track, but I quite like the simple and graceful touch that it gives. I love also the human touch of the plucked synths over it. Hope you'll enjoy. Stay safe, peace

- My own version of Squarepusher's MIDI Sans Frontieres.
Just wanted to give it that old square's old style of glitchy, drum and bass thing.
As always... Everything was made with only a PC keyboard and a mouse pad... No pads, midi controllers, pianos... Nothing. Sadly.
AND THANK YOU TOM, FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY & GREAT EXPERIENCE. - My version is a reconstruction. I never used the pencil within the matrix editor to write any notes of my own - I used the downloadable midi data, and simply repositioned it, cut it up, stretched it and shortened it. I only had a few hours to get this done, so it's much shorter than I would like and rather rough. If have liked to have played with the audio files too. Maybe another time!
I've been a huge fan of Squarepusher since '99 and to - technically - contribute with him feels great! I hope some people can enjoy this rendition.
Mike - My remix , albeit a subtle one.
- One love.
- Replacing previous version -- Thanks for the inspiration and message - arts are plane for us to peer into the ideal world.

- my remix of midi-sans-frontieres, cheers!
- I am deeply inspired by the idea behind this project, and the emotional sweetness of Tom's piece. I sampled the, "emotion" and "mood" of his piece and created an original composition. This piece is intended to reflect the emotional state that we are all going through no matter who or where we are. It is ultimately intended to inspire hope. I hope you enjoy it. Thank you!

- My name is Nathan from York/Hull,UK and I produce electronic music under the name "Slvshthree" and this is my take on the MIDI Sans Frontires track. This is a fantastic idea for a project, glad to see someone taking a stand in a creative way. Hope you enjoy.
- At the first time I sent my version of Sans Frontiries I didn't put the right name, I hope there is still remaining time.
- New hopefully fuller mix. Amen features a custom roll system built in reaktor. Bass line is using gate signals from the amen/roll system and pitch data from a poorly cobbled together arpeggiator which in turn is taking pitch data from either the chords or the melody. I mention that the arp is crap because I can't seem to get it to behave in a consistent manner so every time I bounce down the track I get a different performance out of the bass! the problem i'm pretty sure is in a core module I don't fully understand yet. I always intended to bounce down a couple takes and edit them together or edit the midi more thoroughly so that the notes are more precisely want I want, but since it seems like the deadline is today I'm submitting this as is.
I think one of the pitfalls of working on a remix is that you can become complacent in your contributions especially if the material you're working on is already really good (like the midi for this track). The danger is having a sense of unearned accomplishment. However the word collaboration convinced me to really consider the presented materials and so ultimately it became about completing an incomplete track instead of remixing for remix-sake. - When I heard Squarepusher had created this open collaboration and reading the idea behind it I knew it was something I should do with all my heart and soul. I am British but I have always felt European and my partner is from a mixed-race background, her father came to this country with nothing but a visa and a backpack and created a successful business, contributing so much to British society. I lived in London 15 years and friends from around the world, I have been appalled and saddened to hear of the attacks and racism the atmosphere of the referendum has created.
My process behind this track was to take the stems offered by Squarepusher and loaded them into Ableton, I played around with them for long time over a few sessions till I got nice little overlaps between different pieces, I was just exploring the sounds really and getting to know them. I settled on only a few loops from only a few of the stems and discarded the rest. I built the track up just by improving with these few loops, adding effects and twiddling the nobs. I added a cello sound and also extracted Midi notes from some of the existing melodies and played these back with Sine waves which I was manipulating. I added a layer or two of spare percussion but decided to keep the track from growing into a beauty thing but rather keep it subdued. I tried to keep it short but it still lasted over 8 minutes. Peace from Norfolk. - Bloodless Mushroom version

- thanks for sharing your work, was a pleasure to work with your material, made it ready for parties in Barcelona ;), hope you'll like it
- Decided to try and do as little structural processing as possible. The track is slowed down to 5.5% of the original (a little over 32 minutes) with a few pitch changes, many layered effects and many dynamic tweaks.
- I wanted to include distant percussion, as if there was a battle nearby. Also, this gave me a great excuse to sync my modular with the original track via MIDI. I love the concept, and wanted to include the original recording 100% - only adding synthetic percussion and delay effects. Thanks for the opportunity.
- Here's my remix of the song, i had a blast making it, thanks for the opportunity. Cheers from Mexico.
- A Xixistix remix of the Squarepusher track.

While i live in a different part of the world than Tom Jenkinson, i feel the concept behind MIDI Sans Frontires is equally relevant. It is important that we continue with the progressive movements that have began and existed over the past century. While there have been several leaps forward in a movement towards equality and understanding of one another despite our differences, it appears that there have been several steps taken in the reverse direction and this seems to be happening in places throughout the world. i am not geographically informed enough to comment on exactly what is going on or where, although i feel the current state of mind in the US is also becoming more xenophobic once again. i believe these circumstances have a more potent and detrimental effect than we may even realize, when this state of mind is perpetuated thought societies it effects the way people interact as individuals; this anxiety and hostility is often then directed at the people in the immediate environment. Friend and family connections can suffer as a by-product of political and societal scenarios and this can be quite detrimental. Through my interpretation of MIDI Sans Frontires i chose not to alter the composition itself, but to modify the sounds used and create a very different space through the sonic textures and fragments. It is a very "into the void‰" feeling and my hope is that it may take the listener into that sea of consciousness where those boundaries and borders don't exist, that singular point of emotional awareness where there are no words or discrepancies. In this state there should be no fear of that which is different because to anyone that does experience this state (i believe that) it is essentially the same feeling, the same emotional experience that is something every human is capable of, and is a common thread between us all. - For this I just wrote a variation of the original theme on the piano, and intersected it with one of the original melodies.

I cut up the Squarepusher's original track and made this one. It does not use any synthesizers, drum machines, samples, and files which he prepared at all. For example, the base line is made by changing pitch of a part of original track. - My interpretation of Squarepusher's "MIDI Sans Frontires" as part of the open collaboration project initiative to allow artists globally to come together and remind the UK that we are truly connected. Utilizing the original track as the basis, this remix was performed and manipulated live in a single take without overdubbing or editing.

https://wmbl.bandcamp.com/ - The response to Brexit was unacceptable, personally I am not against leaving the EU, however, I am against the attitudes displayed on both sides after the result, The racism was just horrendous and disturbing to say the least, even the apocalyptic town criers were so hateful and prejudice against the entire leavers side, ignorance has been orchestrated by our careless indifferent media from both sides.
Mankind just cannot seem to see itself for what it actually is, the precious life of the universe itself, existence manifest, all interaction is self interaction, all harm done to others is self harm, we are slowly killing ourselves because we fail to see our obvious connection that we are all the same being, even our planet and universe is an extension of our bodies, or rather we are an extension of those things, it's madness to fight, it's deeply depressing, it adds a lot to my personal struggles with depression, I feel paralyzed from the neck down, there's nothing I feel I can really do about it, I just hope this protest spreads some love and unity in a world/system that is pretty much designed to breed hate, ignorance and indifference through the vessel of ignorance.
Our true home has no walls, we are all one big family.

- Good Day!! (not human)
- MIDI Sans Frontires (sadfem version)
- I spent the 19th to the 23rd of June this year at Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics, learning to begin to program music in SuperCollider. That's not a very long time, and the sum total of what I've learnt is used here; I could perhaps have done something more ambitious using another method, but I didn't want to. The night of the referendum vote was the last full day of my classes at Stanford, and unlike my friends at home, and my partner who had dutifully acted as my proxy voter earlier in the day, I wasn't able to sleep through the counts; as my lecturers spoke I kept the BBC website open behind SuperCollider on my laptop, refreshing and refreshing until all the counts were done and I knew 52% of the population had voted to leave the EU.
I've never stayed up to the end of a count before and never want to again. There is a powerlessness to it I couldn't have anticipated. As the only UK-based student in my class it was hard to make my American classmates and lecturers understand my distraction and upset at the referendum result, but their kindness even in the face of something comparatively unknown to them will stick with me for a long time. I worry about my friends who are people of colour in the wake of the reported rise in racist attacks; I worry about being unable to visit Germany, where my entire maternal family live without dual citizenship; I worry about a return to the depths of austerity; I worry about friends who are unemployed and my own employment prospects when I graduate; I worry about the NHS. There's a lot to worry about. It piles up like the phrases of this piece.
It's hard not to feel, now, like the country is more in ruins as a result of this referendum than any other vote in the course of my lifetime so far. As I write this we are essentially in governmental stasis with little we can do to change the situation except to exercise our democratic right when we can by voting, joining parties and unions and demonstrating if we are able, but in a smaller sense, to look out for one another, extend hands and say, I will stand with you and work with you and support you regardless of borders or government or where we are from or how we identify. In a very small way this is one attempt at doing the latter.
Code (and vague instructions for live performance - the piece is semi-live-coded by triggering patterns and is thus different every time) is available at pastebin.com/rhHAexVh. - My submission is a dreamy track that I recorded on my Tascam Portastudio 244. I went for the rework-beyond-recognition approach. The lyrics are not particularly about the UKs relationship to the EU, it's rather a song for my girlfriend who's from Georgia, a country desperately trying to get EU membership.

- Hi.
Your words made a lot of sense to me, they reflect more or less the feeling of sadness and despair I often have when looking at the situation in so many countries today.
It looks like the sense of sharing and being opened to the others is slowly but surely breaking up. Words and ideas that simply could not be tolerated just one decade ago are viciously poisonnning our societies today.
I hope that what I send here is not too bad, since I would be honnored to be part of this worldwide commitment against hate and bigotry.

(15min records Twitter @15minrecords) - MIDI Sans Frontires version by Krzyzis. Perhaps the most worrisome things about victories based on hate is that the future is uncertain; if one event happens, imagination goes into overdrive and allows one to imagine a whole variety of fear-based results. This uncertainty and emotions it can cause can be captured with music, even if the projects intention is to bring people together (which is great). But the inherent worry remains. This version works within this sphere of worry.

Thank you so much for such an opportunity to share with you music and thoughts. Brexit is of course the sign of strange times of nationalism and sadness.
As a french i have the deep belief that we must fight for solidarity and sharing, i feel this referendum as a kind of fail but naively maybe, i always have hope in the good outcome and intelligence of people.
Anyway, this is the remix, having your tracks on my laptop was a bit weird !! i'm a fan of your music since Hard Normal Daddy, never passing a year without listening to Beep Street and one of your albums...

Made over the last 2.5 days, working with just the MIDI provided, mainly due to having shit net connection, and being able to work at a different tempo! The original track seemed like a synthetic orchestra in a way, so I tried to stick with that in mind with the sound design in the beginning then I‰Ûªm not sure where it goes, some sort of frenetic sonic love poem to the European Union. - Artist: PickBeatz (Poland)

- added beats and some other instruments. bpm still the same though. :) thank you for this and all your music & great sounds ! gr from Holland. -Roy

- Dear Tom,
Here is my remix of MIDI SANS FRONTIÌöRES. I have to start by saying, the original is an incredible piece of music and I instantly fell in love with it. I turned it into a progressive techno track at 124BPM which suits my style of production. I put a lot of effort into making this track special so I do hope you enjoy it and want to host it :)
PS: Keep up the great music!
All the best,
